CGI will never beat this. The intent of the H.264/AVC project was to create a standard capable of providing good video quality at substantially lower bit rates than previous standards. It"s taken me a while to get around to watching The Lord of the Rings, but I am very glad that I have now seen it. In fact, it actually made me read the books and I prefer the movies to the books.
One of the things that I enjoyed so much about this movie is the absolutely *stunning* cinematography. Filming in New Zealand was a brilliant move and I am so glad that this was filmed "on location" instead of in the studio. I realize that a good deal of this movie is CGI, but it flows beautifully and there aren"t any particular moments where you say, AHA! Green screen! Right there!
I truly enjoyed the performances given by the lead actors. Especially Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn. His performance is authentic and he obviously strove to not only play, but *become* his character. Orlando Bloom is wonderful as Legolas and this is easily one of my favorite performances from him. Although in all technicality Legolas is a supporting character, he is an individual supporting character. In the fellowship, there are no other elves for him to be supporting, so in that aspect he is a very individual character, even if he is not the lead. Elijah Wood is good as well. he does a wonderful job of capturing the simplicity of Frodo and his depressed emotional state. And more credit to Mortensen as well as Liv Tyler with their emotion charged love scenes. A rare thing in Hollywood, these scenes are more sensual then sexual. a welcome relief from the modern Hollywood blockbuster that just screams sex.
Many people aren"t particularly wowed by Peter Jackson"s directing ability. But I have to say that I think he did a wonderful job. Despite the 178 minutes running time, the movie never drags once. Jackson did a good job of getting as much as he possibly could out of his actors and that is easily the film"s biggest asset. This is an amazing film and everyone should see it.

Sure this film wasn"t perfect, but when I noticed it was put together by two amateur filmmakers - this being their first ever production, as writers and directors - and I"m guessing brothers, Colin Krisel and James Krisel, I was very impressed! This is by far one of the better B-grade independent films I"ve seen in a while, and mad respect for their effort and final result.
Now before any of the wannabe critics with their low ratings who clearly don"t know how to review a film say this review is fake or paid, click on my username to see my 1000+ ratings and 900+ reviews. In my profile you will see (and learn) how to properly rate a film. Complaining about an actors eyebrows (user G9) is simply infantile. A true movie buff will take all aspects of the entire film (read below) and also consider the production value and experience of the filmmakers. You can"t compare apples to oranges. After all, new filmmakers have to start somewhere, right?
Now this little gem; from the start, I noticed the excellent cinematography and color choices, especially in the different countries and sets. Next I was very pleased with the score and sound - very fitting and not overbearing which is what you get in most B-grade films. The 90 min runtime was just right, however the pacing needed picking up for the most part. The casting was excellent with very convincing performances, with the exception of the newb (this film being his 5th full length feature, probably his fist as lead) actor, Zach Avery as Sam. His inexperience showed, but probably wouldn"t be as obvious if a seasoned director quarterbacked his acting for each scene. The directing by the Krisels was on point - you"d never expect this was their first ever film. For that matter, their directing was better than some seasoned director"s films I"ve seen lately. Their story was great, suspenseful and refreshing. There were some plot and technical issues, as well as the pacing I already mentioned, but again, you"d never know this is the first ever screenplay by amateur filmmakers.
Overall I really enjoyed this film and its little plot twists and suspenseful scenes. I can"t wait what these two new filmmakers put together for their second film entry on their resumes. Again, mad respect and props to the Krisels for their first film being a gem!
It"s a very much deserved 8/10 from me.

OK, first off I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed the book, so perhaps I am biased! However, I went with people who knew nothing of Harry Potter et al but they enjoyed it as much (if not more than) myself.

The children in the film are amazing. Probably Harry Potter himself is the most colourless at times, but this too is in keeping with the flawless character - Hermione and Ron are both excellent, and not at all "stagey. The adults, of course, are of the very highest calibre, even if you do come away with the feeling that Alan Rickman didn"t have enough to do as Snape. Robbie Coltrane is very memorable as Hagrid.
I loved practically everything about this film, the special effects, whilst very good, do not intrude too much, even though I do feel the Quidditch match did go on for a bit too long. The start of the book, when Harry is with the Dursleys, is heavily abridged, but then you cannot include everything.
The film is long, and by the end I have to admit a few of the younger children in the audience were getting restless. However, an eight-year-old boy I know was absolutely enchanted for the whole two and a half hours. The pace is fast, but then there"s a lot of book to get through!
I am not a big fan of book adaptations, however I can easily say this is one of the very best. Of course, as usual you come away thinking about your favourite bits that they missed out, but that just encourages you to re-read the book.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher"s Stone is a wonderful film, I wholeheartedly recommend it. It"s imaginative, and if it doesn"t bewitch you, nothing will.

Christopher Nolan"s ninth film (including Following, as I do) Interstellar was released today and I just had to go see it. And was I pleased? Kinda, yeah.
I"m a HUGE Nolan fan. I really like all of his films; he"s my favourite film director and he even happened to make my all-time personal favourite film, Inception back in 2010. So there"s a lot for me to expect from him.
Interstellar was the Nolan film I"d been waiting for for quite some time now. Knowing he always cites Star Wars: A New Hope and 2001: A Space Odyssey as some of his favourite films and biggest inspirations made me want him to try doing something like this himself. And he finally did!
I did really, really, really enjoy the film. Nolan knows how to hold the audience no matter what. It"s interesting throughout, compelling, occasionally tense and quite emotional at points. I thought that Matthew McConaughey did an excellent job (one of my favourite roles in a Nolan film thanks to him) The score from Hans Zimmer is arguably one of his best (and that"s saying a lot. It"s also very visually pretty (some nice cinematography from Nolan"s new cinematographer at times. The concept is clever and is executed nicely, but I do feel it does fall apart at times - maybe trying a little too hard. At points I felt it was trying to be this generation"s 2001 a little too much, but it didn"t bother me all that much.
It is nice to see such an ambitious film in such a way that it obviously has had a lot of time and care put into it. It really shows. I still hold by my opinion that Nolan is yet to make a bad film. It just isn"t AS great as some of his previous works in my opinion.
Overall rating: 7.4/10 (may change depending on second viewing thoughts.

What I said about classics like Iron Man, Spider-Man 2, X2 or X-Men First Class holds true for Captain America.
I love the range of emotions and development you experience following Steve Rogers from beginning to end of the film. He grows in to the hero role and you grow to like and admire him as you watch, maybe moreso than any other Marvel hero. I know, that"s saying a lot since that"s what truly makes Marvel great. It"s not superpowers but relatable pathos and depth of character. Well, Cap delivers all that and more. It all works remarkably well as they humanize Steve and draw you in to the story. First Avenger is not just a good comic book movie. It"s a great movie period.
The complexity, depth, heart, emotion and action are off the charts. I honestly can"t believe we"re going to see a better movie this summer and, for that matter the rest of the year. I totally agree with most of the film critics who are raving about it. The complexities of a man dressed in a flag are more then anyone could have been expecting. The evolution and growth of the characters is also something you rarely see in a summer film. I loved the supporting cast a lot, how many summer films can you say you"ve seen that flesh out supporting characters? I"m so glad this movie turned out as good as it did and that most people are finding it and loving it as well.

And remember, in Iron Man 2, the reel tony watched of the Stark expo was from the early 70"s and he (Tony) was not even 10 yet. Strange timing.
